Collapse ▲Cooperative Extension, NC State Extension, and USGS are hosting a one day workshop to help answer questions and offer recommendations to Extension staff, volunteer organizations, municipality employees, Emergency Services personnel, and local organizations to help answer questions and provide guidance on landslide and streambank repair needs due to TS Helene. This workshop is NOT for homeowners, but more focused on the needs of those who are in the field consulting with homeowners about recommendations for small scale repair efforts.
Classroom topics being covered include:
- What are landslides, when, why and where they happen
- How to determine slope Rise and Run Calculation and Slope Calculator
- Vulnerable Landforms and Soil Types
- Underlying Rock Depth
- Run-off and slope maintenance
- Remediation of impacted Slopes and Preventive Measures for Future Storms on Non-Impacted Slopes
- Use of Drones for Slide Repair
- and Engineered Solutions
We will also spend the afternoon in the field at various sites assessing compromised slopes and learning stabilization techniques for sloped land and streambanks.
We are excited to offer this one-day workshop at the TWO locations listed below:
- Thursday, December 4th – YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Buncombe County
- Friday, December 5th – Mayland Community College in Mitchell County
The workshop will take place from 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and the cost to attend is $15 per person which covers lunch and supplies.

In order to fully register for the event, please complete the Google form at the link below AND mail your registration fee of $15 made payable to “Yancey County Cooperative Extension” to Yancey County Cooperative Extension, 30 E US Highway 19E BYP, Burnsville, NC 28714. PLEASE include your name in the memo line.
