As of this morning we are still on track for our region to experience a potential major weather event likely to arrive late Thursday and throughout the day on Friday. Safety in an event like this is the first concern so please make sure you and your family are prepared and safe. As far as crops go, we are at the end of the growing season for most summer crops, but there may still be work to do before the storm arrives.
Things to try to do before the storm arrives:- Harvest as many root crops as possible (sweet potatoes, carrots, etc).
- Bare soil should be covered to prevent wash out. This can be done by top dressing with leaves, straw or hay. It's best not to use tarps as the weight of the water on top can cause compaction.
- If you have storm drains, down spouts or culverts on your farm or even in your neighborhood, make sure they are free and clear of debris.
- For young sprouting crops the use of a floating row cover can help to soften the impact from the heavy rain.
