Collapse ▲Meghan Baker is our Buncombe County Small Farms Agent. Her role is to support new and existing farm businesses in Buncombe County. This includes site assessment and farm planning, navigating the farm business landscape and regulatory world, and technical production for a wide variety of crops. A special focus is on medicinal herbs, through the WNC Medicinal Herb Growers. Organizational partners include ASAP, Organic Grower’s School, NC State’s Alternative Crops Program, and SAHC’s Incubator Farm.
Helping people manage their land resources wisely is extremely fulfilling for Meghan. Some of the best moments are returning to farms that have implemented Extension recommendations and seeing their leaps of progression. The ongoing learning required in this job is also very rewarding to her.
Meghan’s entire career has been rooted in the plant industry – anything related to botany and horticulture interests me!
A funny experience Meghan shares is that she will never forget is when she accompanied a livestock agent to a small cattle farm. He was helping teach a farmer how to castrate some young bulls and Meghan’s role was to help handle the cows and get them into the barn. The cattle were very skiddiish and at one point the small herd nearly barreled her over. She will never forget the image of galloping cows coming towards her and thinking “man, I’m glad I work with plants!”
