4-H Winged Wonders

Each year Buncombe County 2nd grade classes typically learn about life cycles through the 4-H Embryology Program. After the shutdown of 4-H Embryology programs in 2022 due to Avian Influenza outbreaks, demand for an alternative curriculum continues to increase in order to fulfill the need for teaching life cycles in a hands-on way in the schools.

In an effort to still offer an enrichment program focused on life cycles, Buncombe County 4-H offered the 4-H Winged Wonders program to 8 classrooms in the county. Kits which included the Winged Wonders 4-H curriculum, a butterfly house, poster showing the life cycle of the Painted Lady butterfly, and sets of caterpillars were provided to each classroom. Training for teachers was provided related to growing the butterflies and using the equipment. In addition to the kits and teacher training, Extension provided an introductory lesson about life cycles to students which focused on butterflies, apples, and chickens.

As a result of offering the 4-H Winged Wonders program in 2022, 157 students in 8 classrooms in Buncombe County were able to learn about the life cycle of the Painted Lady butterfly and relate these concepts to other life cycles including chicks and apples. Teachers expressed appreciation to Extension for quickly coordinating a substitute for the 4-H Embryology program and also expressed interest in hatching butterflies in addition to chicks next year.

This program still continues today with 18 classes and over 300 students participating in the 2024 project!
