Collapse ▲19 youth competed in Raleigh for the North Carolina State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest from July 31 – August 2nd. They all competed in Skill-a-thon, Quizbowl, and Livestock judging. They’ve put in long hours practicing every week since the middle of February and have learned a lot! Youth who participate in these contests learn how to evaluate livestock animals, tools, feeds, breeds, cuts of meat, and more. Beyond the content material – they develop critical thinking skills, practice public speaking, and have to be able to justify their placings in oral reasons. It is a lot of fun to see them develop these skills as we practice over 6 months, and rewarding to see them be recognized at the state contest for their work!
While their awards and ribbons were many, I am more proud of the progress that I have watched these 19 youth from Buncombe and Henderson County make over the last 6 months. The amount of hard work and dedication that they put into learning and preparing for these contests is admirable. I thoroughly enjoy working with them and watching them help each other too. I wish they could see the difference in where they started and where they are now – the ribbons will never compare to how much they’re growing and learning!
Please join me in congratulating these talented youth in their successes at state contest –
