Beef cattle producers in Western North Carolina have the opportunity to strengthen their herd management skills at the WNC Cattle Reproductive School. This hands-on workshop will be held Friday, May 15, 2026, at the Mountain Research Station and is designed to give farmers practical experience with management techniques that directly impact herd productivity and profitability.
Reproductive efficiency is one of the most important factors influencing the success of a cow-calf operation. During this full-day program, participants will work with instructors and live animals to better understand how to establish an effective breeding season, evaluate reproductive status, and make management decisions that improve conception rates and herd performance. Farmers will have the opportunity to observe and practice pregnancy checking methods, including palpation and blood testing, while learning when and why each approach may be used.
The workshop will also explore the advantages and considerations of artificial insemination compared to natural service. These discussions will help producers determine which breeding strategy best fits their farm goals, labor availability, and herd genetics. In addition, participants will learn how reproductive data can guide culling and animal selection decisions to build a more productive herd over time.
Because the event focuses on hands-on learning with cattle reproductive tracts and live animals, space is limited to ensure participants receive meaningful instruction and individual attention. This small-group format allows farmers to ask questions, practice techniques, and gain confidence in skills that can be applied directly on their farms.
For producers looking to improve herd fertility, make more informed breeding decisions, and increase overall efficiency, the WNC Cattle Reproductive School offers a valuable opportunity to learn practical, research-based management strategies in a supportive environment.
Registration is limited to the first 10 paid participants, and the $15 registration fee includes lunch.
