4-H Tinker Box

NCA&T University is looking for families interested in participating with their new 4-H Tinker Box Program again this year. If you aren’t familiar with a “tinker box,” it’s a box filled with supplies for tinkering. Some people make it geared for crafting, others make it geared for engineering. It is an engaging STEM activity intended for youth to explore and create with minimal guidance. Rather than focusing on projects, it focuses on inspiration and the freedom to create.

The 4-H Tinker Boxes will allow families to experience 4-H STEM activities at home as a self-paced family project. Families will have the opportunity to request a tinker box using the link below. Quantities are limited and we do request that families request one box per child at this time. If you have two kids around the same age that can work together, please do so in order to allow as many families to participate as possible.

Register Online:

The Tinker Boxes:

  • Our elementary school youth will be working on designs for a roller coaster made of straws. Families will need to provide glue and lots of imagination! All other supplies will be included in the box.
  • Our middle school youth will be working on designs for wiggle bots. Families will need some recycled materials from around the house. All other materials will be provided in the box.
Boxes will be first come first served (120 boxes for each age group). Please note that we will not ship boxes to PO boxes or outside of NC.
The boxes are themed with national celebrations and holidays. Boxes will include
Engineering-Week, Earth Day, Summer Fun, and Computer Science themes.Families will be asked to share pictures and videos to a private folder in GoogleDrive. They may also share their work via social media using the hashtags provided in the letter for the box. The photo/video release is included in the registration.

Program Evaluation:

A very important component of this pilot is the evaluation. Please make sure that the activities/challenges are complete within a month of receipt and that the evaluation is returned. We will not be able to continue this effort beyond this year without data that says that is working and reaching our NC families. Families will be able to receive boxes throughout the year, however those that do not return the evaluation may be moved to the waitlist.
