Description:
Learn how to properly install and maintain wetland and riparian plants to provide the greatest chance for survival. This free, interactive workshop is brought to you by N.C. Cooperative Extension – Chatham County Center and Mellow Marsh Farm.

During this hands-on workshop participants will gain practical, real-world knowledge and skills as they rotate through the following stations:

  • Planning to Plant – Learn how to work with nurseries to ensure you get the plant material you need when you want it. Gain knowledge about planting plans, terminology such as shallow land and shallow water, and what this means for plant survivability.
  • Understanding Wetland Plants –  Learn about species commonly planted in wetland, riparian and stormwater management sites during a tour of Mellow Marsh Farm, a wetland plant nursery specializing in seed propagated wetland plants native the southeastern US. During the tour you will gain knowledge about how plant material is propagated and sold, as well as terminology for such as plugs, tubelings and live stakes.
  • Planting and Establishment – This station will cover care of wetland plants from the time you pick them up from the nursery until they are planted on the site. Topics you will learn about include planting level, planting technique and tools, storage of plant material before planting, and you will be involved in a hands-on wetland plant installation.
  • Maintenance – Learn how to manage the most common challenges in wetland and stormwater sites. These include controlling water levels and managing weeds, trash, and critters such as geese, turtles and muskrats.

Please Note: This workshop will be held outside rain or shine! Please dress appropriately for outdoor conditions and uneven terrain, including sturdy footwear (no flip flops please).

Who should attend?
Landscape professionals involved in the installation and maintenance of plants in stormwater ponds, constructed wetlands, rain gardens/bioretention, riparian buffers and other stormwater best management practices.

Spanish language translation available! If you or members of your crew would benefit from Spanish language sessions please indicate so when you register.
