Getting to know your woodlands: A primer for beginners

Join other woodland landowners through out the region to learn about how you can take better care of your woodlands. This is a regional Extension course being offered in 5 sessions.  The first four sessions are webinars hosted by your local Extension center on Thursdays from 7-9 PM from February 21, 2019 to March 14, 2019. 

February 21, 2019: 7-9 PM   Getting to know your Woodlands, learn how natural and human forests have shaped the forest in this region and the importance of this knowledge when developing management plans and practices on their forests.

February 28, 2019: 7-9 PM Managing your Woodlands, learn about the basics of pine and hardwood management with tips on managing for the future.

March 7, 2019: 7-9 PM  Identifying and Managing Woodland Threats, learn about forest health with emphasis on a few basic pest principles, model example of each threat, and some simple practices to help ensure your woodland remains healthy and productive.

March 14, 2019: 7-9 PM  Wildlife and Woodlands, learn about wildlife and your woodlands with a focus on wildlife habitat requirements and enhancing habitat for game and non-game wildlife.

An optional fifth session maybe offered by the local Extension center. To participate in this course contact one of the following Extension offices.

Description: Carolina Farm Stewardship Association and NC Cooperative Extension have partnered to deliver a workshop that will provide an overview of the process required to successfully go through a USDA Harmonized GAP Audit. During this workshop we will provide attendees with the resources to build your Food Safety Plan, discuss how to effectively conduct risk assessments and address common challenges that farms experience as they become GAP Certified. The USDA GAP Harmonized Audit was modified by USDA in 2018 in order to be aligned with FSMA’s Produce Safety Rule, we will discuss what this means for farms being audited. Pre-registration is required – see link below.


Cost: $20 CFSA Members / $25 Non-members (lunch included)

Description: Get ready to have some 4-H fun with other teens (13-19 years old) from the West District! Our West District 4-H Teen Retreat will take place Saturday, March 30 – Sunday, March 31, 2019 at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain. Registration and ice breakers will start at 9:00am Saturday morning and we’ll be done with the retreat by 2:00pm Sunday afternoon. The cost for Teen Retreat is $105/person which includes lodging, all linens, 4 meals (Sat. lunch, dinner; Sunday breakfast, lunch), DJ for dance, t-shirt, workshops, and recreation activities…..what a deal!! Scholarships are available to Buncombe County 4-H members for this event. If you are interested in a scholarship, please contact Holly at holly_jordan@ncsu.edu.

The District Officers and Agent Advisors are excited to be bringing some new and exciting changes to this year’s Teen Retreat. We will be in a different facility at Blue Ridge Assembly. The YMCA staff will be doing some Team Development workshops with us. In addition, the Innovation Station bus from NCA&T University will be making a visit! They will offer a computer coding workshop on their bus. We will also be offering new and exciting workshop sessions. …And we will be having a DJ for the dance! 

Workshops will include:

  • Team Development Course (everyone will take this workshop led by Blue Ridge Assembly educators) Each youth is expected to take the Team Development Course Parents must complete permission forms for that workshop.
  • Computer Coding (on A&T State’s *Innovation Station STEM bus) In addition, parents and youth must complete permission and safety forms to enter the Innovation Station for the coding class
  • Public speaking with Toastmasters
  • Livestock Judging and More
  • Basic Photography 
  • Intro to the Cherokee Language 
  • Service Project 
  • Hiking/Packing; 
  • 4-H Ambassador training: Marketing 
  • First Aid and CPR
  • Prepping for the new “Virtual AIRE”

Buncombe County registration is due no later than Friday, March 14th to the Buncombe County Extension Center. This is not a post marked date….it must be in hand at the office. Please make sure to include a completed registration form, payment, waivers (included in the registration packet), and 4-H Medical Release (please double check to make sure these are on file at the Extension office). Checks should be made payable to “Nc Agricultural Foundation”.
