Collapse ▲The Buncombe Clover: A 2025 Year in Review
As 2025 draws to a close, we take a look back on some of the highlights for Buncombe County 4-H. The purpose of 4-H is to provide youth with exciting learning opportunities to help develop them into positive members of our community.
Buncombe County 4-H reached over 2,000 youth through our hands-on school enrichment programs, clubs, projects and events. Some of our largest school enrichment programs this past year included Embryology with Second Graders in the County and Conservation Field Days in partnership with Buncombe County Soil and Water for Eighth Graders in the County. Buncombe County 4-H Livestock Projects for 2025 included the WNC Dairy Steer Project with 20 youth participants and the WNC Pullet Project with 41 youth participants.
4-H Clubs & Summer Fun
Buncombe County 4-H also added two new clubs in 2025: Ridgecrest 4-H Club and Swannanoa 4-H Horse Club. During our 2025 Summer Fun Program, six local camps were offered for youth in Buncombe County, with learning opportunities including Kids in the Kitchen, Outdoor Adventures, Food Preservation, Fair Exhibit Crafting and more. This year we also took sixteen youth to 4-H Overnight Camp at Betsy Jeff Penn 4-H Center in Reidsville, NC!
Youth Accomplishments
Buncombe County 4-H had several youth achieve great accomplishments and awards in 2025. The Sandy Mush 4-H Club had twenty-nine youth qualify to attend the 2025 North Carolina 4-H Shooting Sports State Tournament in Ellerbe, NC. Ten of these youth placed at the State Tournament: Andrew Gillespie, Ethan Cox, Jake Rymer, Libby Bryant, Abby Greene, Luke Rymer, Tyler Williams, Paul Banks, Ayden Plemmons and Anna Reeves. Ayden Plemmons also represented Buncombe County on the North Carolina Rifle Team and competed in the 2025 National 4-H Shooting Sports competition in Grand Island, Nebraska in July. The team placed 7th in the Nation for CMP and 8th for small bore rifle silhouette. Each of these youth have spent countless hours on their projects this year and we congratulate all of our Sandy Mush 4-H members who participated in shooting sports projects in 2025!
One Buncombe County 4-H’er submitted an Electric project record book for State Competition: Sol Keeler. Sol qualified to attend 4-H Electric Congress in July, 2025, sponsored by Duke Energy and Dominion Energy.
Four youth competed at the West District Activity Day for the 2025 4-H Presentation Competition: Emma Nicholson, Henry Grant, Millie Nicholson and Simon Martinez. Each of these youth qualified to advance to the State Presentation competition. At the State competition, Simon won Silver in Chicken Outdoor Cookery! Congratulations to each of these youth who worked so hard on their projects in 2025!
Seven youth competed in the 2025 North Carolina State Livestock Competitions in Raleigh, NC: Janie Kay, Jackson Reeves, Addison Revis, Andrew Gillespie, Kaylee Revis, Brantley Meadows and Hesston Meadows. These youth competed in the Skill-a-thon, Livestock Judging and Quizbowl competitions. From March to July, these dedicated youth practiced weekly to increase their knowledge of beef, sheep, swine and goats and each of these youth placed at the 2025 State competition!
