Flier for Fall Pro Day

Join us for the Fall Pro Day which will be held at the Haywood County Extension Center on October 30th! The class will run from 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. with an additional bonus session that will be 2 hours of instruction conducted from 3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. for an additional business and technical recertification credit for the NC Landscape Contractors License. If you attend both the general and bonus sessions, you will earn all of the recertification credits needed to maintain your landscape contractor license.

Register online! The cost to attend the first general session is $40.00 with an additional $10.00 add-on to register for the bonus session. Lunch is included in the registration fee. If you have any questions, contact Rachel Douglas at 828-456-3575.

8:00 a.m.: Registration

8:20 a.m.: Welcome- Rachel Douglas, N.C. Cooperative Extension Agent – Haywood

8:30 a.m.: “Security, Transport, Storage”- Scott Few, NCDA&CS Pesticide Inspector
Learn about how to safely store, and transport chemicals and other inputs securely to ensure compliance and safety on the job.

9:30 a.m.: “Planning for Alternatives to Neonics”- Minda Daughtry, N.C. Cooperative Extension Agent – Jackson & Swain
Update on the Pollinator Protection Act focusing on neonicotinoids and their
commercial use and current consumer perception. Discussion on other
management options such as synthetic insecticide alternatives, organic
perspective, and cultural management.

10:30 a.m.: Break

10:45 a.m.: “Flat Headed Appletree Borer and Other Pests of Shade Tree- Anthony Lebude, Associate Professor and Nursery Extension Specialist
Scouting, identification, and management of various pests on shade trees will be discussed. Research and management practices will be shared in order to manage these pests effectively.

11:45 a.m.: Lunch (included with registration)

12:45 p.m.: “Abiotic Disorders of Woody Ornamentals”- Sam Marshall, N.C. Cooperative Extension Area Specialized Agent
Description and identification of abiotic disorders. Proper identification of abiotic
disorders leads to reduced misapplication of pesticides. Understanding abiotic
disorders and how to prevent them reduces other disease and insect issues. The
talk will also discuss herbicide injury and how to prevent and identify herbicide
injury.

1:45 p.m.: “Water Quality & Pesticide Performance”- Rachel Douglas, N.C. Cooperative Extension Agent – Haywood County
Identify potential roadblocks in water quality degrading pesticide efficacy. Factors including water pH, turbidity, and water alkalinity will be discussed as well as best management practices to mitigate these potential hurdles.

2:45 p.m. Wrap Up & Evaluations

Bonus Session:

3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.: “Data Driven Decisions: How to Maximize Efficiency”- Luke Owen, N.C. Cooperative Extension Agent- Buncombe

This class will discuss how data can impact efficiency by analyzing time management, job retention strategies, identifying trends to improve sales, and improving customer retention. Focus will be on different technologies including time management software, marketing data integration, and other technology applications.

4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.: “Right Plant, Right Place”- Luke Owen, N.C. Cooperative Extension Agent- Buncombe

Discussion will focus on the importance of site selection including drainage, soil nutrients, and of course plant selection and how to educate your clients in regards to proper plants to choose based on their unique needs.

NC Pesticide credit will be given for the following categories (requirements to maintain your license):
