2019 Program Year 4-H Project Record & Portfolio Winners

4-H Project Records and Portfolios are an essential part of North Carolina 4-H. They focus on capturing a 4-H’ers growth and learning over their time in 4-H. This practice helps build essential life skills, such as record keeping, organization and writing. Project records are done on a yearly basis and can be completed on multiple different topics which youth select. This opportunity allows youth to explore new topics and help them discover their passions, guiding them in determining what they would like to do when they grow up. A portfolio is three years of work and record-keeping in one project area. These require diligent work from 4-H’ers and detailed record-keeping. Judging of the 2019 Program Year Project Records and Portfolios were delayed this year due to restrictions presented by COVID-19.

Three individuals from Yancey County: Benjamin Varney, Derek Heidenfelder and Oak Klein competed at the state level for Project Records. Derek Heidenfelder won Gold for his Project Record in the Family and Consumer Sciences category, he also won Bronze for his Project Record in the Science & Technology category. Benjamin Varney won Gold for his Project Record in the Healthy Lifestyles category. Oak Klein won Silver for his Project Record in the Plant Science category.

Four individuals from Yancey County: Benjamin Varney, Derek Heidenfelder, Kyler Glover and Jeremy Heidenfelder competed at the state level for Portfolios. Each individual won a State Award for their Portfolios. Benjamin Varney won Silver for his Portfolio in the Family & Consumer Sciences category, and won Bronze for this Portfolio in the Electric Energy category, also winning 1st place for the Duke Energy Progress Territorial Award. Derek Heidenfelder won Bronze for his Portfolio in the Family and Consumer Sciences category. Kyler Glover won Silver for his Portfolio in the Leadership category. Jeremy Heidenfelder won Gold for his Portfolio in the Public Speaking & Communications category.

Congratulations to each of these 4-H’ers for their hard work and accomplishments! If you are interested in learning more about 4-H and the youth opportunities available in Yancey County, contact Jordan English.
