The Worker Protection Standards (WPS) require a respirator fit test and medical clearance for any pesticide that requires a respirator on the product label. Pesticide inspections by N.C. Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services will require documentation that anyone who mixes, handles, or applies pesticides that are labeled to require a respirator has a medical clearance and fit test. This includes the owner and family members.

We do not have a complete list of chemicals that may require a fit test. Some pesticides that we know may require a respirator are:

Paraquat (Gramoxone), organophosphates (Lorsban, Thimet), acephate (Orthene), methomyl (Lannate), flumiozazin (Valor/Panther), carbamate (Aldicarb), acifluorfen (Blazer), some seed treatments, diruon (Direx), Fluazifop-p-Butyl (Fusilade), fumigants, fomesafen, acetaimpirid, and chlorothalonil. There may be others that are not on this list. ***Disclaimer – The use of brand names and any mention or listing of commercial products or services in this publication does not imply endorsement by North Carolina State University nor discrimination against similar products or services not mentioned.***

N.C. Cooperative Extension of Richmond County will offer a respirator fit test on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, starting at noon with appointments in 20-minute increments, with the last appointment at 4 p.m. Please call 910-997-8255 no later than Friday, January 31 to schedule an appointment. You will need to provide your address so the required paperwork can be mailed and completed by you and your physician.

There will be a charge of $10.00 for the fit test. You will need to obtain medical clearance from a certified medical professional before attending the respirator fit testing session. As an alternative, you can complete an online medical questionnaire before attending. There is a $35.00 cost for the online questionnaire. You can find the questionnaire at Resp Test or Resp Exam. Please bring proof to the respirator fit test session to show you have completed a medical clearance.

For anyone needing accommodations during the respirator fit test, please contact the N.C. Cooperative Extension of Richmond County office at 910-997-8255 five days prior to the event.
